The United States is a major force in the Freestyle Wrestling. However, in 2008, its wrestlers made a poor campaign, winning 2 medals, 1 gold. From 2000 to 2008, US wrestlers won only one gold medal per Olympic Games edition. In London's 2012, however, the United States was one of the highlights of the tournament, winning a total of 4 medals, 2 gold and 2 bronze. MEN. The U.S. ranked first, together Azerbaijan, in the number of gold medals criteria, with two wins. However, in the total medals criteria, USA placed third place behind Russia and Georgia. Jordan Burroughs, in the division up to 74 kg, confirmed his favoritism with a easy victory over Iranian Sadech Goudarzi and got the gold medal. But the tournament's big surprise occurred when Jake Varner, competing in 96kg's division, reached the final against Ukraine's Valerii Andriitsev, another surprise of the tournament. Varner won the fight and, thus, the olympic gold medal. The favorites Reza Yazdani, from Iran, and Abdusalam Gadissov, from Russia, failed to reach the podium. Yazdani defeated Gadissov but He got injured in other fight and He couldn't continue in the tournament. The U.S. completed its good campaign with a bronze medal by Coleman Scott in 60 kg division. WOMEN. The United States had a weak performance among women. The US just earned one bronze medal, in the category up to 48 kg, with Clarissa Chun.
