The US athletes won 17 medals in Track and Field events in the 1896 Athens Olympic Games, taking part in 12 events. US athletes medalled in 10 events, missing the podium only in Marathon and 800m events.
James Connolly became the first olympic champion in Modern Era in April 6th, 1896. He jumped 13.71m, 1.01m longer French Tuffère.
Ellery Clark put a great showing, winning the high and long jump events.
Robert Garrett was the best US athlete by winning the Shot put and discus thronwing competitions and placing second in high and long jump competition.
William Welles Hoyt started the winning streak of the U.S. in the pole vault competition, as the country would only lose its first Olympic competition at the 1972 Olympic in Munich.
Thomas Burke was the first and only man to win the 100m and 400m races in one edition of the Olympic Games.
