They surpassed Russia in total medals with 11 to more than their rivals, but in terms of number of gold medals the difference was only one. The US men won a total of 15 medals, 3 gold, reaching the podium in 12 events. The women, contradicting the US tradition in Athletics, were responsible for the good performance of the country, with a total of 14 medals, six of them gold. U.S. women's team has never achieved achieved similar performance in olympic games without boycotts. They reached the podium in 10 events. MEN. The United States confirmed its long tradition men's athletics competitions, with a total of 15 medals, 3 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze, reaching the podium in 12 events, largely outperforming other countries in total medals. In number of gold medals, the USA team tied with the UK and Jamaica. The USA's  big disappointment occurred in the sprints, where its athletes have only won 6 medals, only one gold. Incredibly, USA did not reached the podium in the 400m race, an event USA had lost had the last time in 1976. USA have also lost the 4x400m relay event on the track for the first time since 1952. USA have also got off the podium in the 200m race, entirely dominated by Jamaica's athletes. Besides, USA have only won the bronze medal in the 100m final. Their only victory came in the 110m hurdles race, with the gold and silver medals. USA also lost the 4x100m relay, reaching the silver medal position. In Junping competitions, USA athletes won 4 medals. The Christian Taylor's victory in triple jump highlighted the USA showing. In Decathlon, USA athletes secured the gold and silver medals. USA athletes had a poor performance in throwing competitions, only a bronze medal. However, the Americans could celebrate silver medals in the 1500m and 10000m distances. WOMEN. USA's women conducted a sensational campaign with a total of 14 medals, 6 gold, reaching the podium in 10 events. They failed to overcome Russia's 16 medals, 6 gold, but their results ensured the overall victory for the U.S.. The USA's women performance were quite different than achieved by USA men. The U.S. women dominated the speed races, winning a total of 10 medals, 4 gold. They got gold and bronze medals in both 200m and 400m races, silver and bronze in the 100m hurdles race, as well as silver medals in the 100m and 400m hurdles races. Moreover, they won 4x100m relay strongly, breaking the world record, and the 4x400m relay. Allyson Felix was the best athlete of the team, with three gold medals. In jumping events, the U.S. also were dominant, winning the long jump and pole vault competitions. However, they failed largely in combined and throwing events.
